Feeding Brevard Zoo giraffes, birds fun for kids

TJ’s review: 5 out of 10 stars My review: 7 out of 10 stars

The real draw at the Brevard Zoo is feeding the giraffes lettuce for $2 a pop, so be sure to bring money with you. They grab the lettuce and carrots from your hands on a raised platform, and the only thing separating you is a rope divider. There also is a pavilion in the back of the zoo where you can pay $1 to feed birds seeds on a stick or nectar from a small cup, but either way you will have the chance to get close to the birds. The birds are not afraid of people, so if your kids are leery of animals be sure to choose the side with the bird food sticks so you can keep some distance from the birds.

$5 day review

This zoo has deals each year for $5 entrance, but the line took about 25-30 minutes and you have to bring your Florida ID to get this price for each adult. I had a party of five, so it only cost $25 entrance (no tax). The problem was leaving. It took us 45 minutes in this long line to exit because it is only a two-lane street. They have a cute swimming area, but the line was too long to get into this attraction on the $5 day. I recommend going with plenty of time and patience if you want to brave this day again, which was May 31 and may happen again in Fall 2019.

Insider tips

I recommend bringing a huge jug of water because you can refill it with fresh ice at the back of the park at the concession stand. They have filtered water fountains at the front and back of the park near the train. Another tip is you are better off renting a motorized wheelchair if you are bringing grandparents because it is hard to push the $10 regular wheelchairs on the sand and wood walkways.

The food is reasonably priced and looked pretty good (I checked out a reasonably sized salad). They have pizza at the front of the park near the kids splash area that wasn’t too bad when I had it. I suggest eating before you go to the park. There are fast-food restaurants surrounding the zoo, so get some cheap drinks before you go inside. They don’t check your bag, so you can fill it with snacks and drinks. This is a really hot park with minimal shading, so choose your time carefully to avoid sunburn and heat stroke.

Price

The daily price for adults and kids older than 11 is $19.70, and kids cost $14.70. There are zip lines for $44.95, and kayaking is a separate price. The best deal is $5 admission day, but they have year passes called memberships that range from $79.95 to $139.95. The options are located at: https://brevardzoo.org/membership/
